Reading at Nelson Mandela School

We LOVE reading at Nelson Mandela School – it is the key to everything and gives us pleasure and joy. We read classic stories and texts and more modern books as well as poetry, plays, newspapers, anything you can think of really!

In Early Years we start with learning lots of songs and rhymes and listening to stories from all over the world. We develop our listening and speaking so we can tell our own stories. We use Little Wandle to learn our Phonics and read Big Cat books that match our learning so we can practice at home.

We have a beautiful, well stocked library from which we can borrow books to take home. We use Accelerated Reader in Key Stage 2 to find texts that match our reading level and also have a “free choice” of a book we like the look of! We love doing the quizzes and can be quite competitive. Every class has its own Reading Area and mini library with a range of fiction and non-fiction.

We have an ERIC session everyday in class and all children who need a little help get to read with an adult. Our teachers really focus on the skills of reading too in daily VIPERS sessions where we learn to read as writers.

We have Junior Librarians who help Mrs Bhachu (our amazing Librarian) to keep the library organized and to help us choose books. We have Reading Champions in Year 5 who are working with Magic Breakfast to make our school even more of a Reading for Pleasure school. Next term some of us will be reading with volunteers from bookmark.

Reading helps us in all areas of our lives. We learn about other countries, other communities, other times and so much more.
