Putting your child at the heart of learning

Health For Life

Our school has recently joined a Birmingham Health Services project called ‘Health for Life’, designed to make sure pupils and their families have the skills, knowledge and opportunities they need to be as healthy as possible.

We will keep you updated with any ‘Health for Life’ related events and initiatives taking place in our school.

Packed Lunch Policy

Nelson Mandela School recently received an award from the Lord Mayor. Hudhayfa Waheed had this to say about day - "When I arrived there was a red carpet, just like I was a king! We sat on comfortable chairs. Later on the Lord Mayor made a presentation, then it was time for the awards. We were the second people to go up. The Lord Mayor gave us two awards, 'Health for Life' and 'Be Healthy'. We all felt really proud to represent our school and of what our school had achieved"

Visiting the Dentist

Did you know your child should visit the dentist every 6 months?  This is so the dentist can help prevent decay and identify any oral health problems at an early stage. This is a free service provided by the NHS; a list of nearby dentists are listed below. (Wherever possible, please try to make appointments out of school hours)

Birthday Celebrations

As you know we have recently made the decision to become a 'NUT-FREE' school, to help ensure our children with severe nut-allergies are safe.

As part of this we will no longer allow children to bring in cakes or confectionery on their birthday, as it is too difficult to ensure these items are nut-free. In addition, regularly giving out sweets and chocolate does not fit well with our 'Health for Life' ethos.

We are of course keen to mark your child's birthday in some way, we will celebrate all the pupils' birthdays for the forthcoming week in our Monday morning assembly.

Summer Term News

Over half-term we have had some changes in our school garden! We now have a large raised bed for each year group, plus an extra special one for our wheelchair users. At the moment they look rather empty, but the children have already
begun planting seeds and we are expecting quite a transformation by the summer! As well as involving pupils in the gardening, we will be using the area as part of our Science Curriculum and cooking with the vegetables and herbs that they grow. We will keep you up to date via the school website.

The project was funded through our school’s Health for Life grant. We would like to particularly thank Earlswood Nurseries who did a fantastic job for us and also provided our extra bed free of charge.

We would also like to thank Experian who sent a team of volunteers in, and spent a very long hard day clearing, tidying and pruning in the garden.

On Monday 22nd June, Ismahaan, Moaiz and Hafsa represented Nelson Mandela School at the Health for Life celebration event. It was held at the very prestigious Edgbaston Cricket Ground and over 30 other primary schools attended, as well as some very important visitors. It was great to find out what other schools had been up to and share our experiences and ideas. Our children put some of their skills into use, making fruit kebabs to give to visitors to our stand. They also tasted a few other school's offerings - even beetroot and chocolate cake (which was delicious!).

Our next event is the Horticultural Show on the 8th July. We've all got our fingers crossed that our vegetables have all grown in time!
